J. Bart Hopper
Founder

Bart Hopper developed his passion for real estate after graduating from The University of Texas at Austin and moving to Houston. He spearheaded the development of an office tower in Pittsburgh, and then became a partner with Lincoln Property Company in Charlotte, helping to shape the city’s skyline with his involvement in developing the Bank of America Tower. Bart also left his imprint on communities throughout the Carolinas, such as Jetton Cove, a mixed-use development known as the gateway to Lake Norman. As the 21st century began, Bart co-founded New South Properties, a development company specializing in retail and residential development. He followed that success by starting Hopper Communities, a company intent on leaving a positive imprint on some of the New South’s great cities including Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham, Charleston, and Austin/San Antonio. A Texas Longhorn fan since Earl Campbell won the Heisman Trophy, Bart enjoys attending Texas University and Carolina Panther football games. He also enjoys golfing and spending time with his children. Bart travels to Austin for business and pleasure and also enjoys relaxing along the South Carolina coast.

Clay McCullough
Senior Vice President

Clay McCullough graduated from the University of Georgia and has been an essential part of the Hopper Communities family for over nine years. He oversees land acquisition entitlements and residential development for our Charlotte market. Clay’s patience and devotion to maneuvering through challenges is vital to successful land entitlement and development. His steadfast approach to this sometimes lengthy process, has earned him trust and respect among investors, lenders, architects, engineers, and the Hopper Communities Family. Clay McCullough and Bart Hopper have become a dynamic team in our industry and within the Charlotte market. They have built a solid reputation for creating outstanding neighborhoods with exceptional value. Clay and his wife, Heather, have been Charlotteans for over fifteen years. They are avid Georgia Bulldog fans, have two active children, and like many parents, spend their weekends cheering at soccer and baseball games.

Bill Harrell
Land Acquisitions & Development Partner

Bill Harrell majored in Urban and Regional Planning at East Carolina University and has eighteen years of Real Estate experience. He now leads planning, development and rezoning for residential and retail properties in our North Carolina Triangle area. A native North Carolinian who’s proud of his small-town roots, Bill has resided in the Raleigh area since 1998 and has been instrumental in creating some of the area’s most successful neighborhoods. His loyalty to small communities, and the neighbors who call them home, gives Bill an edge in infusing each community’s charm and character into the neighborhoods he creates. When Bill is not working, hunting or fishing, he and his wife enjoy playing soccer with their kids and taking them to ECU football games.

Tom Dorsett
Senior Vice President

Tom Dorsett grew up in Charlotte and has seen the QC’s transformation from a small Southern city to a fast-paced financial hub and relocation destination. After graduating from West Charlotte High, he earned his bachelor’s in economics at UNC-Chapel Hill. He got a more hands-on education during summer construction jobs in Colorado and Texas, and he used contacts there to begin his homebuilding career in Houston. He married Dawn Rufty, a native of Lenoir, N.C., and returned to Charlotte to work for Strickland Martin building condominiums in Dilworth and at Lake Norman. He founded Dorsett Construction in 1987 and focused on building and renovating custom homes and high-end multi-family residences. He was part of the development and construction team for both Settlers Place downtown and The Crillon on Fenton Place. His two daughters both live and work in New York City, and his son lives and works in Atlanta.

Trey Hopper
Project Manager

Trey Hopper received his bachelor’s degree in business management with a finance concentration from North Carolina State University, and earned his MBA from Queens University of Charlotte. He gained extensive knowledge about the importance of being an advocate for consistency and quality while building single-family homes and townhomes for M/I Homes. Trey also previously worked as a procurement agent for Pulte Homes, supporting the company’s growth by identifying trade partners in both Charlotte and Nashville. At Hopper Communities, he is known for his in-depth understanding of residential construction operations and skill at visualizing what it will take to achieve goals. He and his wife Erin, a proud third-generation Charlottean, enjoy spending time on Lake Wylie with their two black labs, Lady and Hutch.

Jack Thomas
Senior Development Manager

Over the past eighteen years, Jack Thomas has successfully managed the development of neighborhoods ranging from homes for first-time homebuyers to exclusive neighborhoods with amenities such as pools, clubhouses, tennis courts, walking trails, and more. His strategy for ensuring collaborative results, is built around cultivating relationships with architects, engineers, and sub-contractors, enhancing his ability to overcome challenges in the field. His ability to embody positive leadership contributes to Hopper Communities producing desirable and valuable neighborhoods. Jack graduated from North Carolina’s Gardner-Webb University and played free safety for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, making him well-suited for roving the field and tackling problems. Jack’s wife, Debbie, and his daughter enjoy the outdoors as much as he does. They love to ride bikes, go snowboarding and host cookouts with family and friends.

Ron Schulz
Land Acquisition & Development Partner

When the Hopper Communities family expanded into the Charleston area, Ron Schulz led the charge with more than thirty years of experience in residential land acquisitions, development, and home building. He has developed real estate in numerous markets across the country, including San Antonio, New Orleans, Phoenix, and Naples. Ron is determined, and persistent, but it is his love of land and the Charleston Low Country that drive Ron’s dedication to creating neighborhoods that bring excitement and pride to a community. Ron’s gift for “walking the dirt” is a largely forgotten tradition in our industry. His intimate knowledge of land and topography allow him to visualize and deliver beautiful neighborhoods that hold their value over time. A graduate of The University of Texas at El Paso, Ron moved to the Charleston area fifteen years ago, and can’t imagine leaving. He enjoys scuba diving, boating off John’s Island, and local cuisine, including feasting on Lowcountry Boil with friends.

Theresa Blum
Office Manager

Theresa Blum has worked with Bart Hopper for seven years, making tremendous contributions to our growth through her strong work ethic, fiscal experience and highly responsible nature. Theresa efficiently manages the home office, handling accounting and human resources for all Hopper Communities offices. Establishing an environment of support, collaboration, and respect, Theresa has proved to be of great value to the Hopper Communities family. Theresa and her husband, Jeff, have lived in the Charlotte area for fourteen years. Their two boys are talented lacrosse players, so cheering at a game is a regular family activity. Theresa volunteers for her son’s school, finds time to walk her dog Zoey, and enjoys reading a good book.

Tyler Gatewood
Vice President of Acquisition and Development

Tyler Gatewood has spent his entire life in Austin, TX and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in finance.  He has over 10 years of experience in land acquisition and development around Central Texas.  Tyler prides himself on the relationships he has created with contractors, engineers, municipalities, lenders and investors.  He truly believes that relationships are the core to success and is focused on growing Hopper Communities’ presence in Austin and San Antonio.  Tyler and his wife, Brittany, have two beautiful young children.   They love spending time playing at the pool, park and taking their children to San Diego, Brittany’s hometown.

Kelly Cunningham
Operations Manager

Kelly has over thirty-three years of experience in managing residential homebuilding operations for national/regional homebuilders in major Texas markets and in Columbia, South Carolina. He is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Finance and Real Estate and Urban Land Development. Kelly entered into the homebuilding industry with Pulte Homes and became the VP of Construction Operations working in multiple cities during his tenure. Additionally, he has been the VP of Construction Operations with Meritage Homes, Jimmy Jacobs Custom Homes, Century Communities and M/I Homes. Outside of pursuing his passion for homebuilding Kelly enjoys spending time with his wife Kimie, their three children and five grandchildren.

Stephen Phaling
Project Assistant

Stephen joins the Austin team after graduating from Oklahoma State University with degrees in Finance and Accounting. A native of Dallas Texas, he manages accounts payable and warranty procedures for Hopper projects in the Austin area while relishing the learning experience of working in the field. He has been involved in the many stages of construction up to and including closing, customer orientation, and final walk-throughs. Outside of work Stephen enjoys watching college athletics and cheering on his Oklahoma State Cowboys, especially when they come down to Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns, as well as rooting for all of the Dallas area professional sports teams. Stephen grew up playing ice hockey in Dallas and continues to play in recreational adult leagues, and he always looks to spend time with friends and family.

Alex Little
Senior Construction Manager

Over the past two decades, Alex Little’s resume of residential construction experience in the Charlotte area has read like a “Who’s Who” of well-known builder names. In the late 90s, he made contributions to the reputations of both Pulte Homes and Parker Lancaster. As the 21st Century dawned, Alex moved on to serve as a superintendent for Newmark Homes, and then project manager for Turnberry Homes. When 2009 brought a housing-industry downturn, he persevered as owner of his own company, Birkdale Builders, orchestrating renovations that enabled homeowners to make the most of their investments after the market rebounded. He caught the attention of MI Homes and joined them as superintendent in 2014. When he subsequently became a custom-home project manager for Grande Custom Homes, this Thomasville, N.C. native was even able to put his UNC-Charlotte bachelor’s degree in Computer Science to work developing the company’s website. Away from work, Alex coaches his son’s sports teams, and along with this wife Stacey, enjoys wake surfing, surfing and boating at the lake and the beach.

Max Thomusseit
Construction Manager

A native of St. Paris, Ohio and longtime resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Maxwell Thomusseit now enjoys calling the Carolinas home. Max graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, where he also performed as a Division I college wrestler. After a short stint on a pit crew for Hendrick Motor Sports, Max found his true calling in the construction industry with Hopper Communities. Max brings strong problem solving and negotiation skills to the team. Outside of the office, Max enjoys water sports on Lake Norman.

Marcus Hughes
Accountant

A Charlotte native, Marcus was active in athletics at Providence Day School, receiving All-State recognition in both Football and Lacrosse, before heading to NC State University where he earned joint degrees in Accounting and Business Administration. He then earned a Masters of Accountancy from UNC Charlotte. Before joining Hopper Communities, he worked as a staff accountant in public accounting at two local established CPA firms. In his time off, Marcus enjoys staying active, running, attending sporting events, taking part in alumni events, traveling and spending time with friends and family.

Trey McDaniel
Development Manager

Trey McDaniel received his bachelor’s degree in business management with a focus in business development/entrepreneurship from Clemson University. He is a NC General Contractor and has been working in the residential construction industry for ten years with multiple national builders. This experience has provided him the ability and knowledge to manage the build of new homes and oversee the implementation of new community infrastructure and development of land. His dedication to provide a quality product for our customers and his “do the right thing” mindset, makes Trey extremely valuable to our clients and our team. Trey has a passion for driving growth and brings strong relationships, resources, and acumen to Hopper Communities. He is a loyal Clemson Tiger fan and loves attending home games with his Dad and sister, a family tradition since he was born. He and his wife, Jessi, like traveling to the mountains, being active outside, visiting family on the SC coast in Murrells Inlet and Edisto Island, and spending time with their Greater Swiss Mountain dog, Murphy.

Meghan Darst
Marketing Director

Meghan oversees the marketing, design and communications for Hopper Communities. She received a BS in Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology with a
Marketing Minor from Appalachian State University. After graduating, she moved to Charlotte and worked for an Investment Brokerage Firm as a Senior Marketing Coordinator. With interest in the construction industry, she joined Hopper Communities in the Spring of 2018. Meghan is responsible for managing the company’s overall marketing strategy, messaging and deliverables for each community, as well as providing creative direction for all projects. Outside the office, Meghan enjoys staying active and spending time with family, friends and her Australian Shepherd, Boomer.

Adam Brown
Purchasing Coordinator

A St. Louis native, and longtime resident of Nashville, TN, Adam has settled down with his family in the Charlotte area. Getting his start in the non-profit sector, for nearly 10 years he managed humanitarian efforts for Youth With A Mission after graduating from the University of the Nations. This experience took him to 12 countries on 4 continents while making lasting friendships, and changing lives along the way. Transitioning to construction work to help fund more projects, he ended up running his own Home Improvement and renovation company in Tennessee that left homeowners with a renewed enjoyment of their home’s updated look and feel. He has been married to his lovely wife Morgan since 2006 and loves spending weekends camping, hiking, kayaking, and having fun with his 4 kids – Anna Belle, Ellie, Winston, and Claire.

Zac Thomusseit
Superintendent

A native of St. Paris, Ohio and current resident of Charlotte, North Charlotte, Zac graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Studies & Communications, where he also performed as a Division I college wrestler. Before joining Hopper Communities, he worked at Milwaukee Tools as sales representative and pit crew member for Hendrick Motor Sports, Zac soon found an interest in the construction industry with Hopper Communities. Zac brings strong problem solving and negotiation skills to the team. Outside of the office, Zac enjoys staying active, boating on the lake and spending time with friends and family.
